Options and Opportunities at Avon View High School

What is O2?

Options and Opportunities is an academic program which leads to a provincial certification in addition to your high school diploma. The focus of the certification is on career development through seven key courses which only O2 students have the advantage of taking.

O2 Courses

In addition to the provincial high school graduation requirements, O2 students must take the following:

Career Development 10- students explore their interests and strengths and what possible career paths they may choose. Portfolio and resume building along with financial awareness are some areas of focus.

Community Based Learning 10- students participate in community service projects, volunteering and opportunities for career exposure through job shadowing, school trips and having the community come to the classroom.

Career Development 11/Workplace Health and Safety- students continue to build their Life work portfolio while earning very useful and marketable certifications such as First Aid, WHMIS, Fall Arrest, Scaffold Safety, Food Safety, Occupational Health and Safety, Fraud Protection, Fire Safety Training

Co-op 11(1) and Co-op 12 (2) - Students will earn a total of 3 co-op credits. Students will select community hosts/employers to do 100 hours of volunteer experience in a career field of their choice.

What does an O2 student/candidate look like at AVHS?

Students should be in good standing academically, hard workers, co-operative, motivated and appreciate that learning takes many forms, including hands on participation. Students should have a willingness to explore various career paths with the goal to further their education after high school towards their career path.

Benefits of O2

  • Students will develop employability skills and real life experiences
  • Class size is capped to a maximum of 20 students
  • Students will make real world connections between school and a potential career
  • Students will have the opportunity to learn outside the classroom environment
  • Students will gain leadership skills and a better understanding of who they are
  • Multiple pathways to university, college, or apprenticeship
  • Priority seating to any NSCC program
  • Exposure to unique opportunities in and outside the school that other students do not have

How do I apply?

Interested grade 9 students would fill out an O2 application form and return to either Mr. Connolly or the office at Avon View High School by January of their academic year. Click here for application.
